During the 1950s while living in Hollywood, my mother was fired from her civilian job with the Air Force because her brother, who lived with us at the time, had been a member of the Communist Party. He, in turn, had been fired from his job with the movie studio, M.G.M. My mother was one of just a few people who were reinstated after years of legal effort. Her struggle had an impact on not just our household but also other family members. In the end we all did quite nicely, but it was a near thing.
